Who am I to Do That?
Julie B Cosgrove

He was very young. He had been raised as a shepherd. He had no idea what royalty was like, how to act, or how to behave. Yet God had appointed him to rule His chosen people. David felt the weight of that crown on his head. In the book of Ezra it says―
Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:
“Who am I , O LORD God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?” (17:6)
Yet our Lord and Savoir Jesus, who was of the lineage of David, would call Himself the Good Shepherd and often spoke about sheep in parables. Being a shepherd meant having the responsibility to watch over dumb animals, teaching them to respond to his call, and how to obediently follow. These shepherding skills prepared David for his new role as leader of the Israelites. But more than that, it was an essential part of how he followed God as his Shepherd. David's obedient faith prepared him.
If you have felt the tug of ministry, or if one has plopped into your lap, you may have doubts just like David. Who me? How can I do that?
Take heart. God has been preparing you for the role which He has designed just for you in His plan to spread His kingdom on earth as it is in Heaven. All you have read, learned, studied, gleaned from family and friends, from mentors and sermons, from Bible studies and quiet times in prayer will come together. Like piecing together a puzzle, He has been taking all of your experiences and molding them into the stuff you will need to draw upon in order to complete your work through Him who gives you strength. He has brought you here thus far. Trust Him to lead you the rest of the way.

And that is the key. Trust God. David knew that was what he needed to do. His psalms are filled with that plea.

Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me for you are God my Savoir and my hope is in you all day long. Psalm 25:4-5

But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God's unfailing love for ever and ever. Psalm 52:8

Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. Psalm 37:5-6

Did he stumble and sin? Yes. Were there times he doubted? Sure. But he always returned to his knees and to seek God's ways. Even with troubles and enemies crowding in, David clung to God. And God provided the strength he needed so David could be the ruler Israel needed.

Will Our LORD do any less for you or me?

Dearest Lord, were are one but we area one and what we should do by Your grace we can do. You prepare each of us for what You want us to do to Your glory. Let us recall David and turn to his psalms when doubts begin to tickle our faith. Let us boldly go forward into ministry knowing all we have to do is take it one step at a time and You will guide our path. Teach us to trust in You and not our own abilities. We pray this in the name of Your Son, Jesus, our Strength, Rock and Redeemer. Amen

Questions: If you feel ill-equipped to take on a task, who will you turn to in order to find the where-for-all to do it? Friends? Family? Self-help books? The Bible? God? All of the above?
